1. THREE QUESTIONS FOR... Júlia de Andrade BertazziProject Manager at the German-Brazilian Engineering Association, VDI BrasilMs Bertazzi, Industrie 4.0 is an important topic within the German-Brazilian Dialogue on Quality Infrastructure. What are the main challenges and opportunities of Industrie 4.0 for Brazilian companies? One of the critical challenges concerns our infrastructure, such as mobile networks and the internet, as the lack of better network coverage and connection speed are barriers to integration. Another difficulty is the old machinery in the industrial park for connecting and enabling interoperability into global value chains. Old machinery often poses challenges for companies to fully integrate into a digitalised Industrie 4.0 production chain. However, Brazil benefits from the opportunity to learn from the best practices, knowledge and experience of other countries, such as Germany. Together, they develop suitable solutions for both. To achieve integration, everyone must work together. How does GPQI support the digital transformation of the Brazilian industry? First, the working groups between the public and private sectors support the digital transformation of the Brazilian industry by providing a space for discussion and knowledge exchange. Moreover, there has been recent results in the elaboration of the Industrie 4.0 roadmap. This involves the development of technical notes on international standardisation and a quick guide on Global Production Language and retrofitting 4.0, aimed at small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Brazil. These are essential topics for the Brazilian industry. What are the benefits for the industry of engaging in GPQI? The progress in Industrie 4.0 increases if companies receive support from their government and their environment. Thanks to GPQI, the industry can share its needs and find partners with similar experiences and problems to work together towards a solution. Moreover, political actors are part of the discussions. This enables better political decisions on laws and programmes to strengthen the private sector. It is especially important for SMEs, which have more difficulties in finding reliable information and partners for their Industrie 4.0 journey. GPQI is a great help for them in that process since it brings the business community into a dialogue with political authorities and specialist organisations. Júlia de Andrade Bertazzi2.
